Finding Alice

It feels like it was only yesterday that I was plugging away at my computer leaning over the keyboard like a mad scientist allowing Alice’s world to consume me. When I first began to write Finding Alice, I had no idea what it would become and I am thrilled to know now I will be sharing it will all the dreamers out there. I am what I like to call a creative soul I believe all creative souls need a creative outlet. I was never concerned with writing this story and by allowing it freedom in some cases I feel I was merely a medium and it wrote itself. To me writing is relaxing, story telling is exhilarating and creating is fulfilling. I truly cannot imagine doing anything else.

To the veteran writers out there I want to say thank you for being so inspirational to all the rest of us dreamers, readers and debut authors alike. To all those who are new to the self-publishing world or otherwise keep your head up and remember each stroke of a key or pen a small sliver of our soul climbs through us into our work and there is nothing wrong with that. You never know who or how many souls will be touched by our words and bravery to share them because let’s be honest the idea of any one soul hating our work is terrifying.

Interview:

1) What inspires your writing, your muse?

A lot of things inspire me. I get inspired when I'm doing the dishes or driving the kids to school. Listening to music, or reading a book. My muse is always bugging me. But I find that the quiet moments usually lead to the best inspiration. Taking a walk by myself, or even when I'm in the shower. The times when I'm alone usually help me think.

2) If you couldn't write, what would you do?

I manufacture rubber stamps for a living, so I would continue to do that. It's creative and allows me to run things on my own time.

3) Who is your favorite author? Book?

People ask this all the time, and I really feel like there's not one good answer. I have many favorite authors. But I've probably read more Mary Higgens Clark books than anyone, and I always enjoy her books, so I'll go with her today. My favorite book she's written is Loves Music, Loves to Dance

4) When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

When I was about 12 I began writing a novel. When my sister read the first 10 pages and got mad that I hadn't written more, that's when I knew it would be way cool to write a book.

5) Have you gone the traditional route? Indie route? or both?

I tried the traditional route, but only sent out a handful of query letters. Then I self-published. I now have an agent, but haven't signed a traditional contract yet. If they offer the right contract, I will sign it.

6) What advice can you give for writers out there looking to promote?

My best advice is to watch what the successful writers in your genre are doing, and emulate them. And if something isn't working, don't be afraid to get advice or help from others.

About me

I was born in 1982 in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. My passion for history began at primary school but it wasn’t until studying at college that I began writing fiction. In 1998 I discovered the Final Fantasy series and Norse mythology, both of which heavily influenced the birth of my writing. I first conceived the idea of the Elencheran Chronicles in 1999 and in the last decade have written five novels, several short stories and continue to work on an in-depth history of Elenchera that begins with the creation of the world and currently covers more than 47,000 years.

When not working on Elenchera, I enjoy reading (fiction and non-fiction), films (particularly World Cinema), music (mostly artists who are not in the higher echelons of the charts), computer games (mostly RPGs, of course!) and continue my long-suffering support of Barnsley FC whose perennial relegation battles have inspired many a dark tale in the world of Elenchera. Aside from a long-term ambition to be a full-time writer, I hope to one day have an isolated house in the countryside, surrounded by ample land and woodland for my six cats to roam free and to walk dogs daily in pursuit of regular fitness and inspiration.

I live in Huddersfield with my beautiful wife, Donna, our six cats – Kain, Razz, Buggles, Bilbo, Frodo and Charlie – and the fates of millions of lives resting on my shoulders – albeit imaginary ones, but it’s still nice to be omniscient and omnipotent in one world.

In the early morning, Melissa Marn rushed down the hall, her high heels clicking against the marble floor, and her white lab coat billowing behind her. The SCM (Shifter Counterinsurgency Military) ID badge dangled from her lapel, bouncing with each step. Dr. Bruce Wilder, a fellow scientist, followed with just as strong determination. The intensity in his dark eyes, and brows shifted at inward angles, told everyone to move out of the way.

“Please, don’t do this,” Bruce begged behind her, quickening his step, but Melissa moved faster. She jerked her head back in his direction, her hair whipping around.

“I have to. I don’t have a choice. Just like you don’t have a choice,” she argued. Their heated words hit the walls of the SCM base, inviting public ears. Bruce gripped her arm and swung her around to face him.

“Don’t,” he pled one last time.

Melissa lowered her head, sighing. “If I don’t, someone else will.” She twisted away from him and hurried to turn the corner, disappearing from Bruce’s sight. He shook his head, returned to the lab and quieted his mind with busy work.

Melissa raised her head as she entered the Observation room. This order, however disagreeable, required her participation. Her career balanced on successfully accomplishing such experiments, on such moral ambiguities. Rejecting Colonel Raul’s commands would only lead to punishment, and even dismissal.

To a civilian, the order would have offered a choice. Discharge would not be that bad. Returning to life, to freedom, would bring relief. But to the well-trained SCM, to Melissa, no choice existed. The weight of guilt, disappointment, failure and rejection would stink and hang between her and her father for the rest of her life. She couldn’t accept that. Her father would never accept that.

Her fingerprint identification opened the sealed doors. She walked through to two specially formed plastic cots where two alien shifters had been held since six in the morning. Drained of color, they were nearing death. Another shifter dangled against the back wall, clinging to a web of rubber tubes. The grey fluid within him pulsed in and out of his body. Without consciousness, the shifter hung to be studied, examined, probed.

The rubber locks that held the two shadowy shapes to the cots had been especially designed by SCM scientists to prevent shifters from breaking free, the same rubber-jelly used around the iron bars in the cages of the holding room. Three restraints from the bottom, center, and top ensured each shifter had no wiggle room. A few scientists, along with Colonel Raul, stood behind the observation glass above the lab. E-boards and video cameras documented all the data, every detail and discovery.

“You may begin, Dr. Marn.” The ominous, deep voice of the colonel pierced her ears. His Austrian accent mixed with American.

How would your friends and family describe you in 11 words or less? An artistic, creative, funny, a go-getter, who follows her passions.

How would you describe The Day the Flowers Died in 11 words or less? A forbidden, passionate love story set in 1930 Munich, Germany.

You’ve traveled to Korea, Nepal, Tibet, China, and Thailand. Which of those was your favorite place to visit and why? Thailand is a great place to LIVE. Affordable and friendly and accommodating. Korea is a great place to VIST. Expensive and exotic, but too different for foreigners to really enjoy as a life. China, Tibet, and Nepal for me as great short visits or places to teach English. There is a lot of history there.

If you could visit any place in the world (or a place created by a book), where would you go and why? Great question...umm...I would like to go into Star Wars and travel space.

What is your favorite part of being an author? Creating new worlds from my imagination. Then creating characters!

I’ve just given you a time machine. What time period and what place would you go to? Medieval times in Europe.

State a random fact about yourself that would surprise your readers. I often go to work sick. I often say no to social engagements to complete my stories.

If you could give a piece of advice to your readers on anything, what would it be? Write what you know or are passionate about and you will be satisfied.

          Cronk’s show had finished now, and neither he nor Jonathan was around, but the merriment of the worn soldiers continued. Even though many had lost a few silver in the tug-o-war with Cronk that did not diminish the flow of ale into their bellies. Not until the sun started to peek over the mountains would the warriors of Ishtabar head for their bedrolls.

Seeing that Briar was not at his or Cronk’s wagon, Tyree figured there could only be one other place he could be hiding — Jonathan’s. Tyree just hoped that no one had opened up the pack and seen the magical case inside. More than that, he hoped none had figured out how to open the chest to find the heated dragon egg nestled within.

Tyree made his way through the throng of soldiers. Laughter and ale flowed freely and none noticed the Halfling racing by. Reaching Jonathan’s wagon, Tyree grabbed the door handle and flung it wide open. Stepping in, he did not see Jonathan or the others.

Tyree started to search the cramped space within the wagon, which had more than enough room to hide the pack, be it under Jonathan’s bed or table, or hidden within a box or drawer. When Tyree reached the area next to the bed where Eve’s cage had sat, he grabbed the cloth that covered the small table and pulled it off. Instead of seeing the wooden table, he saw a skeleton sitting still on the floor, with legs tucked up to its chest. Tyree was taken aback by this. Thinking it was one of the demonic creatures that had stalked him just a few days ago, Tyree wanted to run for his life, but his feet would not move. The skeleton lifted its bony head, and placed its black eyed stare upon him. Glued to the spot, Tyree locked eyes with the undead. Unable to catch a full breath, he watched the bones rise to its feet, all the while fear seeped into his body.

“Caught in the act,” the voice of Jonathan came from the wagon’s doorway.

Tyree did not hear the hefty man at first. All of his attention focused on the skeleton before him. The skeleton took a step forward and lowered its head to look eye to eye with Tyree. The Halfling saw pinpoints of light deep within the orbital sockets of the monster’s skull. Feeling his nails cut into his palms, Tyree realized that he had a death grip on the tablecloth, and he dropped it. As he did, his knees went weak.

“Trying to steal my money?” Jonathan exclaimed, stepping into the wagon. “It’s a good thing that I have Dole on guard. Otherwise you could have been off with it,” he continued, taking Tyree by the collar of his worn tunic.

Pulling hard, Jonathan made Tyree turn away from the skeleton and look him in the eyes. Tyree could feel the hatred coming off of the carnival barker even as a smile crept on Jonathan’s fat face.

“What do you have to say for yourself? After all the help I gave you. Put food in your belly, and a cover over your head,” Jonathan spat out between clenched teeth.

“Briar…” Tyree stuttered, confused at the man’s outburst.

“Trying to put the blame on Briar, are you?” Jonathan cursed, keeping a tight hold on the Halfling’s tunic.

“No!” Tyree stated, but the heavyset man was not giving him time to think straight.

“No?” Jonathan shouted, “What then, boy? No one else to put the blame on?”

He tossed Tyree to the ground, where the Halfling knocked into the skeleton’s legs. With a sharp kick, the dense bones of the undead lashed out and knocked Tyree into a chair, where it crashed to the floor, almost striking him in the head with a wooden leg.

“No one steals from me,” Jonathan ranted, his face turning red and eyes bulging as if they may burst at any moment.

“I wasn’t trying to steal. Briar…” Tyree started to say, but was cut off.

“No more!” Jonathan shouted, white spittle showing at the corners of his mouth. “Dole, show our friend here what we do to thieves.”

With unnerving ease, Dole stepped forward at Jonathan’s command. White hard fingers lashed out, knocking the desk on his left against the wall. As fast as he could, Tyree scuttled across the floor, heading towards the door.

Jonathan took a swipe at Tyree with the sole of his boot, but missed by inches. Taking another swing with sharp finger bones, Dole knocked another small chair to the side, where it bounced against the wall, then directly into his path. Stumbling against the crashing chair, Dole stopped to kick it out of his way.

Jonathan shouted for Tyree to stop and take his medicine, but the Halfling refused to surrender for something he did not do. Tyree pushed the door open. Reaching for the stairs to pull himself out, he felt the cold grip of Dole’s hand on his bare ankle. Before the skeleton could get a firm grasp, Tyree tumbled out of the wagon and onto the damp grass.

Tyree looked up at the doorway to see Dole crouched down, staring, ready to leap out at him. But he did not, for the door closed, blocking his visage from the milling crowd.

The drunken crowd remained unaware of the commotion at Jonathan’s wagon. Taking advantage of the situation, Tyree ran through the throng of soldiers, knowing every second counted. He ducked underneath a cart, and made his way through the small paddock that corralled the work animals. A few oxen grunted and snorted at the disturbance, but Tyree kept away from their large hooves and horns. He slipped out of the corral and into the darkness beyond. Night vision became clear as the torchlights burning behind him no longer cast their glow on this side of the caravan. Breathing hard, Tyree dashed down the hill and toward the makeshift village alongside the slumbering war camp.

“I have something to show you.” She reached in her backpack and pulled out the picture. She handed to Britta. “It's my mother.”

“Really?” Her friend studied the picture and smiled. “Laylah, your madre was beautiful. And I see where you get your hair color from. Where did you get this? I thought you said your father didn't have any pictures of your mother?”

“My grandmother came to visit and gave it to me.”

Britta hugged her. “I'm glad she did. It's always nice to know what a person's parents look like.”

“Yes, it is.”

Britta handed the picture back and Laylah held it for another moment. Some of her loneliness had eased and she didn't feel as lost. She wanted to know more about her mother. Maybe now, Donil would give her more details.

“We'd better get going to our next class,” Britta reminded her.

“Yeah, I guess so.” She zipped her backpack closed and cradled the picture of her mother close to her body.

They started walking and were almost to the classroom when someone stuck out their foot and tripped Laylah. She cried out, tottered, and crashed into Britta, sending both of them to the floor. She barely managed to keep the d-frame with her mother's picture from breaking.

“Sorry, Britta!” She rolled off her friend and held out a hand to help her up.

“My, my, so clumsy.”

She gritted her teeth. Her nemesis was back. Britta snarled something rude and let Laylah help her up.

“Clumsiness only happens when idiots give it a helping hand,” Britta retorted, an angry glint in her eye as she glared at Violet.

Laylah didn't want to fight. She just wanted to leave. Besides, she hadn't forgotten the principal's threat. She couldn't afford any more trouble. She urgently tugged on Britta's arm. “Let's go, please.”

“Running away with your tail between your legs? That's all you ever do. Well guess what, not anymore!” Violet howled and charged.

Shocked by this unexpected move, Laylah froze. Dimly she heard Britta screaming at her to run away, but it was too late, as Violet slammed into her and she went flying into a locker. She yelped as she hit it hard and slid to the floor. She heard the other girl's malicious laughter and glanced up. Her heart stopped. Violet had her mother's picture!

“What do we have here? A picture, is it? Perhaps, one of your mother?” Violet pretended to study the picture while her flunkies giggled. “You know, this woman doesn't look half bad, which is more than I can say for you, Freak.”

“Give it back!” she shakily stood.

“Oh, are you talking to me? I think that sounded like an order? What do you think, Theresa?”

“I think the little mouse is squeaking again, Violet.”

“I think so, too. The only way to shut up a mouse is to get rid of the reason for its noise.”

“No!” Laylah whispered, horror filling her as she saw the triumphant look in Violet's eyes. She ran toward the other girl.

Violet laughed cruelly, threw the d-frame to the floor and stomped on it. The crack of the plastic casing and then shattering of the glass silenced all noise as the onlookers stared in shock.

Laylah skidded to a halt and dropped to her knees in front of the broken d-frame. “No, no, no,” she whispered brokenly as tears fell.

“Yes, yes, yes! That's what you get, Freak. When you're clumsy, all sorts of things happen.”

Laylah stared at the broken pieces through her tears, that curious roaring in her head and ears rising in volume. Her inner voice yowled its rage as anger sizzled and sparked beneath her skin. She slowly began to rise. “You broke my gift.”

Theresa reacted first and took a step back. “Um, Violet....”

“Not now, I'm enjoying this too much.”

“You evil bitch!” Laylah screamed and her head snapped up.

Violet let out a growl and charged again. Laylah saw her coming but time was slowing as her focus narrowed. She remembered what Mr. Mozar had taught her. Her inner voice was howling in glee. It wanted the enemy's pain to match her own. She felt power surge through her and pain lanced her fingers. She didn't heed it as she threw herself forward. She wanted her claws to rip into the flesh of the one who had hurt her. Everything stopped and the only thing she could hear was the victorious yowling of that inner voice as the roaring in her head reached its peak and crashed over her.

I'm a single dad with three children all of them above the age of 18. I've been writing on and off for years, but I didn't start to actually write seriously until the summer of 2009. My air conditioner wasn't working to well on a very hot day, so i went out to a McDonald's to cool off. I brought an old story i had been playing around with to pass the time while I waited for things to cool. I cant remember if I completed a chapter or not, but it felt so calming to write that I came back the next day and did again, and so it went till Storytellers was done.

With careful precision, she lowered the delicate silver teacup between her forefinger and thumb to the fine mahogany table in front of her. Long brunette hair draped like a curtain about her. Never peeling the almond shaped, deep, chocolate eyes away from him, she bit into the croissant. Maroon lips parted with minuscule necessity. Glazing over her soft porcelain-like skin, his eyes touched her, invaded her space. But never with the hard callousness or coldness she had been told.

As he watched her, she remembered how five years prior she had been warned about his character from her peers, her protectors. Informed about his strict adherence to military law, his apathetic quality, and hatred for humanity. But when she watched him watching her, all the foreboding words vanished like a magic spell cast over them. He made her feel vulnerable, safe...cautious, wild.

When he extended his hand to hers, meeting midway on the table, she blushed.

“I have to be going soon. The...” he cleared his throat, uneasy to talk about such matters with someone of such fragile disposition, “military needs me.”

“Another mission?” Her big brown eyes widened.

“Yes.” He lifted her hand in his, clasping hers with such warmth, and security, she forgot for a moment who she was, who he was. “Shifters have been spotted in the Denali Wilderness. We’re going to send a convoy of soldiers to infiltrate the area and...” he stopped himself mid-sentence. The past five years together only strengthened their relationship, his trust in her. He afforded his companion more latitude than the military allowed and she had become privy to a few missions over the course of their union, yet, with her, he regarded the incidental disclosure without regret.

“I understand.” She lowered her eyes and then her head.

“But I will see you later tonight?” he emphasized as he rose from his chair. She grew silent. “Veena?” She nodded at the sound of her name and then lifted her head almost with force, curled her lips in a taut smile and drew in a fresh breath of the Alaskan air.

“You most definitely will, Major Raul.” She noted his rounded cheeks spotted with red from the cold. A finely combed mustache dressed his upper lip.

“Please, when we’re not on base, call me Carl.”

“Carl,” she whispered as he turned and left. The wind caught her words which floated after him.

Left alone, her head fell. Her eyes caught the silver teacup and she saw her reflection. Nothing and no one stood by to keep her heart from pounding, her head from throbbing, dizzy. To her, the sound of her heart beat like a loud tabla drum. Her head pulsed like a fist against a wall. And she could not pull herself away from her own reflection.

WRETCHED LAND SYNOPSIS

Dmytro Verbitsky, a twenty-year-old Ukrainian aristocrat, after father's suicide discovers that father gambled away his beloved land. Dmytro recovers from the blow and gets a job as a manager on his former estate.

Dmytro and Khrystina, a daughter of a wealthy farmer, are in love, but after Dmytro’s impoverishment, Khrystina’s father arranges her engagement to a wealthy peasant. In despair, Dmytro and Khrystina marry secretly. Khrystina dishonored by her father and she suffers the pain. Dmytro serves at the WWI. After he releases from the POW camp and goes home, the Bolsheviks capture him and force him to join the Red Army and fight in the Civil War. After six years, Dmytro comes home where he finds out that Khrystina was raped by her former fiancé and that she is pregnant. Dmytro finds compassion to accept the child. He promises to avenge Khrystina’s rape. Khrystina and Dmytro barely survive the famine of 1921 by selling their clothes at the market in the city of Kharkiv. The tragedy of forced collectivization follows by drought in 1932. The family of ten children survives the famine by moving from the village to the city where Dmytro got the job as a bricklayer.

Dmytro’s love for land brings him back to the village. He resumes his work at the collective farm as a tractor-driver. Only during hungry and dangerous years of German occupation in WWII Dmytro meets Khrystina’s rapist, who is a German collaborator. With the help of partisans, Dmytro kidnaps Pylyp and takes part in his execution.

Khrystina dies at 85 years old. One year later, Dmytro dies from a heart attack at her grave.

BIOGRAPHY

Mila Komarnisky, a Canadian, spent her childhood in the eastern part of Ukraine. She has a Ph.D. degree in nutrition and metabolism from the University of Alberta, Canada, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Diploma from the Kharkiv Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Institute in Ukraine. As a Doctor of Philosophy, she was invited to work as a postgraduate researcher at Louisiana State University. After an illness, she retired and took a novel writing course at the Winghill Writing School, Ontario, Canada. A recipient of the prestigious Anna Pidruchney Award for New Writers she is now pursuing a career as a novelist.

By my third double, me and the chair were pretty much one. I didn’t need the recliner part, I did pretty well on my own without its help. A couple of times I almost reclined all the way to the floor. Staring at the wall through what I assumed were red, glossy eyes, I kept thinking how I could get myself back together again. Things had been going too good, and I guess I had been due for a backlash. Life ain’t supposed to be a piece of pie for people like me.

The blank wall in front of me became a movie screen and in my mind, I was watching my life. Damn, I worked hard to get where I was. Maybe that had been my mistake. I was who I was. No matter how hard I fought, I was still me.

I didn’t know what made me madder, my present circumstances, or feeling sorry for myself. I never had patience for anyone who laid their sob stories on me, and now I became just as disgusting. That’s it. Enough of this poor little me crap. Time to get off my sorry ass and take action.

bio: I was born in St. Paul, but once out of the hospital I've lived my entire life in Minneapolis. Synopsis:

As Anthony and Jazmine embark on their honeymoon to southern Mexico, they have no idea the dark trail that’ll unfold before them. The couple signs up for an ATV tour and snorkel trip offered by their resort. Two days later Anthony stumbles out of the Mexican jungle bloodied, half dead and suffering from amnesia; he’s the prime suspect in Jazmine’s disappearance. Through his multiple interrogations, Anthony struggles to regain his memory in order clear his name and discover the whereabouts of his missing wife.

The international search for Jazmine reveals nothing, and the F.B.I. is convinced that Anthony is involved, somehow. As bits and pieces of his memory return, he leads F.B.I. Special Agent Monroe on a trail of clues that implicate the couple’s ATV tour guides. Further investigation reveals that Jazmine has been sold to a drug-lord in Panama, and nothing will stop Anthony from trying to rescue her; but as he enters the foreign country, the distraught husband only causes greater chaos.

The door of the interrogation room suddenly opened; FBI Special Agent Monroe barged through, closing the door swiftly behind him. The agent placed his coffee cup on the table but remained standing. He crossed his arms in front of his broad chest and glared down his crooked, beak-like nose. His salt-and-pepper hair was parted to the side and a bold knot finished the top of his tie. He was an intimidating man, six foot four inches tall, two-hundred fifty pounds, with the hardened attitude of a veteran investigator.

Anthony looked up from the table, asking calmly, “How many times are we going to do this?”

Without flinching Monroe answered, “Until you tell me the truth.”

This was the sixth time in the last three weeks that Anthony had been in this seat, and every time it followed the same routine; Monroe probed, and Anthony’s scrappy past came back to haunt him. Life had become a whirlwind of chaos since his honeymoon in southern Mexico. He scowled at the agent.

“I already passed the lie detector test. Isn’t that enough proof for you?”

Monroe’s upper lip twitched as he glared at Anthony. For a minute the FBI agent didn’t respond, prolonging the awkward silence, but Anthony refused to break their eye contact.

Finally, Monroe spoke candidly, “I just want to find your wife.”

Anger bubbled inside of Anthony’s chest, exploding from within. He screamed in response, “Don’t you think I want to find her, too? She’s my wife; I love her!”

Scorching pains shot through his skull and Anthony flinched, massaging his aching temple. The world spun madly around him. He took several deep breaths in an attempt to calm down, but the wound in his forehead throbbed with each thumping beat of his heart. Agent Monroe moved around the table and took a seat in the other chair. He reached for the coffee cup and deliberately slid it across the tabletop in front of Anthony. His finger slowly traced the rim of the cup as he scrutinized his suspect.

Anthony was frustrated with what he saw as the F.B.I. man’s petty little mind game. “Is there a reason you called me down here again”, he asked, “If not, I’ve got more important things to do, like find my wife.”

“That’s just it. We all want to find Jazmine. Hell, we’ve got an international media-circus going with this case. Everyone across the globe has seen her face plastered across the news, and the best search and recovery teams in the world are out there right now looking for her.”

Anthony frowned at the agent. Monroe went on, “But no one can find her; not one single trace of evidence. And you come wandering out of the Mexican jungle, all bloodied up, beaten and half dead, claiming you can’t remember a thing. Two entire days, just vanished from your memory.”

Anthony gritted his teeth in frustration. He knew the scenario, all too well.
